Cutter came into our lives unexpectedly. The year was 2009, and we had recently relocated to South Florida. The move was a big adjustment for my daughter Ella, who had just started middle school. For years, Ella had begged for a cat, but I had always considered myself more of a dog person.

A solo run to Petco for dog food turned into a life-changing moment. I’m not not sure what called me toward the cat section that day. Ella was away at summer camp. I was only running an errand. But there he was: a tiny, talkative kitten who looked me in the eyes, sat in my lap, and never left my side again.

Over the 15+ years we spent together, Cutter (or Cutterbug, as better known to me) was more than a pet. He was family, my shadow, and quietly (and sometimes not so quietly) the muse behind one of the most meaningful parts of my life: Sturdy Girl.

As I worked to build a fabric line that was sustainable, beautiful, and strong, Cutter made sure every prototype was tested—often with his claws 🐾 My favorite linens were no match for his “quality control.” Instead of resisting, I leaned in. I needed to make peace with the little force of nature who loved what I loved… just a little too enthusiastically.

And thus, Sturdy Girl was born—a line durable enough to handle kitty claws and doggy paws, yet soft and timeless in spirit. Cutter helped shape the very foundation of what we make and why we make it.

He waited for me to return from a recent trip to High Point before letting go. Losing him has left a quiet space in my heart, but his presence is stitched into everything I create.

Cutterbug, thank you for choosing me. You will always be my rainbow. 🌈

As we head to North Carolina for the semiannual High Point Market Furniture Market, our hearts and minds linger heavily just westward, with Asheville and each of the Blue Ridge communities impacted so greatly by Hurricane Helene.

Over the years, we have been fortunate to work with artists and tradespeople who call Asheville their home. The loss of both life and legacy here is unfathomable. The devastation is a stark reminder of how climate change has exacerbated such unprecedented events. Climate justice is urgent and imperative.

While we continue to await updates on how Hurricane Helene has impacted our Asheville-based fulfillment and production centers, we want to emphasize that despite the challenges we face, we are profoundly grateful for our health and well-being. Solidarity with impacted families across the Southeast is what truly matters right now.

We encourage everyone to support on-the-ground, grassroots initiatives working tirelessly to aid in recovery efforts. These are a few NC-specific groups doing wonderful work: @wckitchen @belovedasheville @_roar_wnc

Adelene Simple Cloth is currently in a transitional period, carefully evaluating how we can continue to deliver the highest quality products at competitive prices, all while upholding our unwavering commitment to preservation of artisan technique and workplace ethics.

This past February, founder Darva spent an extended period traveling throughout Southern India, immersing herself in generations of meticulously-honed textile manufacturing. From intricate hand looms and state of the art power looms, to time-proven dyeing methods and a hands-on lesson in yarn spinning, Darva delved deep into the heart of the craft. It was a journey rife with inspiration, and one that deeply influenced our vision for the future.

We are thrilled to share that Adelene is forging new partnerships with incredible mill partners. These mills boast their own cut and sew divisions, ensuring that every step of the manufacturing process aligns with our commitment to quality and ethics. Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing a bit more about these processes and how our partnerships intersect with our ongoing values of conscientious production and textile history.

As we navigate this blossoming period, we want to express our deepest gratitude for your continued support and patience.

Why yarn-dyed cotton? 🧶

Yarn-dyed fabrics differ from many other dying methods at the very core of their production. Whereas some techniques, such as piece dying, involve dying a completed piece of fabric, yarn dying is a texture and color choice that begins far before assembly. Yarn-dyed fabrics involve dying individual threads ahead of weaving, knitting, or sewing them into a finished product. This technique allows for a more vibrant and long-lasting hue due to each thread being fully saturated. Whether solid or patterned, yarn dyed fabrics also allow for a more flexible and unique application of texture and motif. The finished effect is a durable and richly-hued product that offers an air of both artisanal craftsmanship and rustic charm— a quality we love at Adelene!
